IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light, and is commonly known as a photofacial.

IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light, and is commonly known as a photofacial.  Damaged skin cells are heated with a pulsed light, improving skin tone and surface imperfections caused by aging and sun damage.  This treatment rids the skin of brown spots, redness, broken capillaries, acne, rosacea, and sun damage.  This treatment is only safe for pale to medium skin tones.

At Cosmetic Solutions we offer IPL (Intense Pulse Light) or photofacial treatments with our Lumenis M22 laser. Our machine is a multi-application platform, giving us the ability to customize any laser treatment to fit the clients needs and concerns safely. We feel Lumenis offers safe and effective ways to treat some issues such as Rosacea, broken capillaries, age spots, sun damage, acne, and laser hair reduction.

What to expect?

During an IPL treatment, your skin will be thoroughly cleansed, and a thin layer of cold, clear coupling gel will be applied to the area. The gel helps to preotect the skin and also aids in cooling the skin in between passes of the intense pulse light. The photofacial machine is set to the safest settings based on skins condition in which we are targeting and the skins natural tone. Photofacials with our specific machine are safest and only performed on skin that falls between a 1-4 on the Fitzpatrick scale, in other words pale- medium tan skin tones. Once the laser is set, the laser is passed one time across the area using a fast no-overlap technique. If the skin has multiple concerns or problem areas the skin may be gone over two times, but never exceeding a double pass. Directly after you can expect your skin to feel as though you have a slight sun burn, this is normal because IPL (intense pulse light) uses extreme amounts of heat to penetrate the skin and break down pigments in discoloration. For the following day you should avoid excessive heat to allow the heat from your photofacial to escape your skin. This means avoiding the use of any saunas, steam rooms, excessively hot showers, or strenuous activity or exercise. As with any of our skin services it is always recommended a minimum 30 SPF is used daily. Your skin will heal for the next seven to ten days, it is important to let you skin heal on its own. Picking and exfoliating too often may cause you to scar.

  • Brown Spots- If you notice brown discolorations of your skin this could be age spots, or sun damage or a combination of the two. IPL is great for treating brown spots so long as they are not raised. Photofacials cannot eliminate moles, skin tags, or keratosis. Intense Pulse Light works by searching for and heating up the pigment in the brown discolored spots. When targeted the spots will appear slightly darker directly following. The IPL works to heat the pigment in these spots and shrink them to smaller particles and bring them to the surface where they will exfoliate off in 7-10 days. Although your spots will look slightly darker the day of your photofacial treatment, you will notice the spots to continue to get darker and smaller for five to seven days, resembling that of coffee grinds on the skin. It is crucial to naturally let your skin rid of the pigment, therefore avoiding the use of exfoliants for the first week is crucial to avoid scarring or irritating the skin. This means no scrubs, Retin-A products, or glycolic acids. Vitamin C and moisturizers are recommended for healing and daily regimen after such photofacials.
  • Broken Capillaries/ Rosacea-Both of these concerns are vascular imperfections of the skin. With our machine we have a unique vascular filter, which only targets the redness of your skin to specifically target these imperfections. The treatment is the same, however instead of getting darker like the brown spots, your redness will look more red for the rest of the day. Anything vascular drains through your lymphatic system, so it is important to drink plenty of water to flush your lymphatic system while healing. The day of your photofacial you will notice your skin will look red, but any broken capillaries or capillaries within the Rosacea will be blanched or a darker red. While treating the face with the vascular setting, it is safe to only go over the face once, as this is a more targeted treatment.
